Step 1
When you wake up on Thanksgiving morning, tune in to the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade on your television. You do not have to watch it. Just having it in the background will be enough to get the day started on the right path.
-
Step 2
Spend the morning cleaning up your home or apartment. Nothing chases away the blues like a clean living space. Light some pumpkin-scented candles if you have them, or visit the market and pick some up.
-
Step 3
Spend the afternoon relaxing. Get involved with a book you have been longing to read. Or, tune in to the football games played on Thanksgiving.
-
Step 4
Closer to dinner time, head out to the local Boston Market and pick up a Thanksgiving meal. While I was away in San Diego in the military many years ago, a Hungry Man turkey dinner did the trick, but today, there are better alternatives!
-
Step 5
When you return home with your feast, sit in the tranquility of your clean home with either the ball game on or some nice instrumental music playing. Keep the lights dimmed for a relaxing ambiance.
-
Step 6
When you finish eating, plop yourself on the couch and give family members a call to wish them a happy holiday. Although you cannot be with them, hearing them will cause you to smile.
-
Step 7
Then, settle in for the night, watching a long-time favorite movie or finishing off that book.
-
Step 8
Thanksgiving alone doesn't need to be depressing. In fact, it can be downright relaxing! Going through the motions of enjoying a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, even when it is just for you can be a rewarding experience and one you will look back on with a smile.
Of course, nothing beats the big family Thanksgiving. But when life throws you a solitary one, make the best of it and you will be surprised at how you can still get that Thanksgiving feeling all by yourself.

on 5/23/2008 Wish I could have read this article a few years ago while in college. At the time I was working at walmart, just started July 2005 and of course asked to have thanksgiving break off to be home with the family did I get it off? Nope, I had to work 3-11.
I was home the few days before that I had off, and family was gonna have lunch since I would not be there but nothing was ready. I was HIGHLY upset/depressed!
My friend was at her boyfriend's only 1/2 hr from me, she was so sweet that she brought me up a thanksgiving plate with turkey, potatoes, the whole deal and she spent the night with me after I got off work at 11.
How many friends in a lifetime can you get like that? Slim to none, so I was grateful to at least spend one hour of what was left of thanksgiving day with her!
At that time this article would have been helpful because I was soooooooooooo upset that I'd be alone o
