How to Find Soundtrack Music for Independent Films

Instructions

    • 1

Watch your movie. Unless you have become a robot, chances are you do not know what happens every second in the film and a legitimate viewing should be a pre-requisite.

    • 2

Note down instances where music will help. Music will not be needed the entire time but there will definitely be times to add some to heighten importance.

    • 3

Decide what type of music fits with the film. Orchestral music or guitar work, or something different? Certain movies require certain genres. Teen films do not usually work with orchestral music and stark dramas do not tend to work with punk music.

    • 4

Look to friends and family. Everybody knows people in bands or who play music. They can most likely supply music in exchange for the exposure they receive.

    • 5

Figure out the musical language. A good soundtrack will have a solid main song or riff as the overall theme and everything else will subtly branch off of that.

    • 6

Probe web sites like MySpace because thousands of independent artists post their music and will exchange a song for exposure.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you play an instrument, do it yourself.

Wonshu, this is an article about the soundtrack music, not the score. They are two different commodities. Movies will generally have both a soundtrack of songs as well as a score.

I have published my score for the film Stepnica. You can grab it here and perhaps there's something in there you like. Custom composed music will _always_ lift the film. Songs work, but they leave a whole part of the emotional content of a film out.
