Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Find out how many smoke detectors you will need in your home. It is suggested to have a smoke detector outside of each bedroom area, Inside each bedroom if you sleep with your doors closed, at the top of your stairwell, at least one on every level of your home including basement. They should be centrally located in your home.
Step2
When getting your smoke detectors make sure they are UL (underwriters laboratory)approved and the best quality you can afford. Ask a sales representative to assist you if you need assistance.
Step3
Make sure you thoroughly read through the smoke detectors manufacturers instruction manual before placing detectors.
Step4
It is preferable to place your smoke detectors on the ceiling in the center, but no closer than 4 inches from the side wall or 3 feet from the peek of a slanted roof.
Step5
If you are unable to mount your detectors on the ceiling then you should mount them on the wall. Mount them at least 4 inches from the ceiling, but no lower than 12 inches from the ceiling.
Step6
After placing your smoke detectors you will want to test them to make sure they are in working order. Follow the manufacturers guidlines.
