How to Study

A lot of college students have problem narrowing down what to study, and how.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • paper line, and white unlined paper
  • blank flashcards
  • highlighters
  • 2 different colored pens of any color
Step1
The teach will obviously give you notes for what you have to study, so after the lecture it is VERY IMPORTANT READ THE CHAPTERS. I cannot stress this enough. Make sure that you throughly read and even take extra notes for the subjects that the teacher emphasized.
Step2
Take no more than 2 pages of your own notes per chapter, and make sure that you include the most important topics. Also make flashcards for important terms, or even steps.
Step3
When you have done the first two steps, you will then need to use the white unlined paper, two pens, and highlighters. You will need two white unlined papers depending on how many chapters you will cover. If you cover 4 covers, use ONLY two white papers. I am sure the notes you have taken from class, and each chapter is probably 4-6 pages for each chapter. We are going to condense these greatly.

SO, fold the paper in half. The top paper will be for the first chapter, 2nd half the 2nd chapter, and so on. The back pages will be the next two chapters. If this is your first time doing this you can just use a page per chapter, until you really can figure out how to condense the chapters properly.

Next, I want you to write the MOST important topics for each chapter. Do not write keyterms! That is what the flashcards are for!
Highlight each topic, and write the title of each topic in a different color, and use bullets if it is list.
Again do not write 5 or 6 sentences about a topic, UNLESS IT IS NEEDED.

Once that is done, it is very important to study at least a week ahead for each test. If you have 8 days to study and 4 chapters, spend a day studying each chapter, than another day studying the important keyterms.
If you study for 2 hours or more take a half hour break, during after 2-3 hours, to insure that you are learning the subjects.

Lastly, most books have study questions at the end of each chapter. I'd recommend doing these if you have time, to insure you know the information. Many college books come with a study guide, once again I'd recommend doing a of these problems, after you have studied.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use highlighters to emphasize important topics
