Step 1
Follow instructions to the letter. Tag your luggage, lay it out for inspection when prompted and stay in line. This is not a time to call attention to yourself.
-
Step 2
Avoid making phone calls when waiting to see a Customs Official. It not only calls attention, but telegraphs disrespect to the procedure. Wait until afterwards.
-
Step 3
Keep conversation to a minimum.
-
Step 4
While waiting, review the details of your trip. What is its purpose? Try and look at it from an outsider's perspective, and think of how best to phrase it when asked.
-
Step 5
Keep all pertinent documents, such as passports and visas, in a single location. Use a pouch or other object to store them. Keep it with you at all times.
-
Step 6
Have an emergency contact number with you, preferably in the country of your destination, in case of problems. Keep this with your documents.
-
Step 7
When speaking with the agent, be respectful and natural. Appreciate the difficulty of his job and try to make it as easy as possible for him to wave you through. Answer questions promptly and honestly.
-
Step 8
If you are selected for further review, do not panic. Stay focused, gather your belongings and prepare to answer further questions.
