Using the Order of Operations Rules Using the Order of Operations Rules

Rate: (5 Ratings)

Mathematics can often be intimidating, especially when we are presented with equations that have more than one process in it. We look at a problem like 8 ÷ (7 - 5) and wonder what to do. It does not have to be that intimidating, and much of the guess work can be eliminated by understanding how to use the Order of Operations Rules. This can help simplify the process, while pointing the student toward the correct answer.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Start within the parentheses. You will first figure out the answer to whatever is being asked inside of the parentheses. This will allow you to replace it with one single number.
Step2
Example of an Exponent Evaluate exponents. An exponent is a whole number with a smaller number written to the top right corner of the whole number. This tells you to multiply the whole number by as many times as the exponent number is. Evaluating the exponent values will allow you to replace the exponent with one single number.
Step3
Carry out any multiplication and division. You will do any multiplication or division in the order it appears from left to right.
Step4
Perform any addition and subtraction in the order that it appears from left to right.
Step5
Evaluate your answer and check to see that you followed each step in the proper order. By not following the order of operation, you may arrive at an answer, but it might be the wrong answer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Though we have the ease of access that comes from using a calculator to work out mathematical problems and equations, it is best to learn how to work the problem out manually before you implement using a calculator.
