Eastern Orthodox churches are often very different from Western church buildings. Here's how to properly enter an Eastern Orthodox church.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Modest Clothing
  1. Step 1

Contact the Orthodox church you will be visiting. If you are an Orthodox Christian and want to receive communion, let the priest know you are coming and offer to bring proof of your baptism and membership in a parish.

  2. Step 2

Ask (or look on the church's website) and see if there are any clothing guidelines. Some Orthodox churches require women to wear skirts and/or cover their heads.

  3. Step 3

When you get to the church, go in the front door quietly as a service is most likely in progress.

  4. Step 4

The first part of the church is called the Narthex. Here you may find a bulletin or service guide. Take a copy and move to the icon stands. These may be in the Narthex or further in the church, in the room called the sanctuary or Nave.

  5. Step 5

When you approach the icons, make the sign of the cross and kiss the foot or hand of the person depicted. Make the sign of the cross again and move to the next icon.

  6. Step 6

Light a candle (and leave a small donation) as you say a silent prayer.

  7. Step 7

When you enter the Nave, also called the Sanctuary, make the sign of the cross. Walk to either side and stand facing the altar.

Tips & Warnings
  • Orthodox Christians make the sign of the cross by moving their right hand up, down, right then left
  • There are many variations of personal piety. Some people make the sign of the cross three times in a row, some add a bow (called a metania.)
