Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- water
- carbonated beverages
- soft foods such as puddings, applesauce, yougurts, etc.
Step1
Buy a pill cutter and cut the pill in smaller portions.
Take a sip of water and lubricate your mouth and throat. Relax. Take a deep breath and then expel it. Now try to swallow each small portion of the pill. Place the pill portion on the back of your tongue, as far back as you can. Be sure to be standing up or at least be in a sitting up position. Never try to swallow a pill while lying.
Step2
If that doesn't work try taking the pill along with some soft food. You can use foods such as: applesauce, puddings or yogurts. Make sure the pill will work with the food. Check on any interaction warnings, especially to dairy products.
Do not try to swallow very much food along with the pill, just use enough to swallow the pill.
Step3
Try swallowing your pill with a carbonated beverage instead of water. The carbonation may help you to swallow the pill easier. You can use ginger ale or any other carbonated products. Just make sure the beverage is cold.
Step4
If you have to crush a pill, speak to the pharmacist before attempting this. Some pills should not be crushed, especially time released medications.
If all else fails, speak to your doctor about giving you a liquid medication instead of medication in pill form.
