How to Make Sweetened Condensed Milk

It is so simple to make, but it does take a long time. Making homemade sweetened condensed milk will save you money especially if you have a wood stove that would be going anyway to furnish heat.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Clean quart jars
  • cheesecloth to cover the tops of jars
  • large canning kettle with rack
  • milk, either skim or whole milk
  • sugar
  1. Step 1

Place 2 cups of milk with 2 cups of granulated sugar in each jar.

  2. Step 2

Cover tops of jars with cheesecloth and place the jars on a rack in an open kettle.

  3. Step 3

Fill the kettle with water to the level of the milk in the jars.

  4. Step 4

Heat to just below boiling, and keep that temperature until the milk mixture in the jars is reduced by half. This takes a long time, about 48 hrs. Each jar yields about 2 cups.
