Grandma has lived a long time. She's always been a part of your life and you want her to know that. But Grandma seems to have two of everything and nowhere to put any more stuff. What would grandma really want, anyway? Here's a few thoughts to help your gift be among her all time favorites.

From Quick Guide: Gifts For Grandma Guide
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know your grandma. Was she a cookie baker or a career woman -- or both? Does she like to dress up and go out on the town or is she a gentle homebody who likes church potlucks and family cookouts. Think about the things that you know have made grandma happiest--was it her family, travel, her work, pets, friends? Write down some ideas, talk to family members who may know things you don't.

  2. Step 2

Plan your gift around your grandma's favorites. How about an outing to some of her favorite places. Is she a shopper? Hit the mall. Does she love Chinese food? Take her to lunch there. Does she love the museum? Take her out for a day of her special activities. Choose things that aren't too pricey and you can pack a lot in--just keep her energy level in mind.

  3. Step 3

Choose differently for stay at home grannies. What are her hobbies? How about a gift certificate to her favorite craft store? Does she love music? Make her a CD--or a few--of all her favorite artists from the internet. Is she a quilter? Look for patterns from the net or in the library and make her up a little book. If you put a little thought into what she likes, she'll love that you put something together just for her.

  4. Step 4

Think about chores. Most grandmas have tons of things they have to find others to do. She'd love to have that time with you and it would help out her finances as well if you'd make out some coupons for those chores. Mowing the grass, shoveling snow, washing the car, cleaning windows, and even tackling the attic, garage or cellar would all be really super gifts that would make her really happy.

  5. Step 5

Think about her limitations, if she has any. Has she given up reading because of her eyesight? How about some books on tape. Is she diabetic but she loves sweets? Find some recipes and make her some goodies with sugar substitutes...include the recipes or make her up a little recipe book. Has she stopped driving but still loves to ride out in the country? Take her out and have a little picnic on route.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your grandma in mind. Think about the space she has, any special needs, and her likes and dislikes.
  • The difference between a Christmas Present that says oh and one that says WOW all boils down to taking the time to think it out.
  • Make sure you think about how much grandma can do if you plan outings. She won't want to say no but it's not fun to cram so much in that she's exhausted.
