It's really tough figuring out what to buy for the elderly. They either have more than they need already or they have downsized and have no room at all. It's especially hard for those in assisted living and nursing home facilities who have no real space and often no privacy. There are ways to ensure that those on your list feel special with gifts they will love.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Think of the person's lifestyle. What was important to him or her. Memories are a really big deal to people who are getting older and slowing down. Think about what they cared about, their jobs, hobbies, their families and friends. If they have no problems with their vision, you can put together a small scrapbook of photos relating to their memories. You can make a pretty photo collage in a divided frame or with a collection of several frames to hang on the wall.

  2. Step 2

Think about their finances. If they are not well off, buy a gorgeous card and put a gift certificate to the grocery store they shop at. You can also buy then a basket of goodies to eat--but keep any dietary restrictions in mind. A basket with flavored coffee, creamer, shortbread cookies, and a pretty mug or a basket of fresh fruit is a good choice.

  3. Step 3

Give the gift of homemade. This is really nice for those who can't cook their favorites anymore. A lovely plate full of their favorite dinner would be a big hit, as would their favorite baked goodies. Several small meat loafs, stuffed chicken breasts, and containers of chili would be a welcome change. If you have time, then give them a coupon book worth one home cooked meal a month. If you're cooking for a family anyway, what's one more plateful?

  4. Step 4

Give the gift of your company. Elderly people who can't get around anymore
are often lonely. Many of their friends are gone and their younger family members can get so busy. Bringing an older person home for a meal and an afternoon or evening together or taking them to a movie or restaurant would be such a loving gift. Again a coupon book or even just one special day out would make your gift say that you really love them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Let your gift reflect the person it's for. Think about their needs, personalities, hobbies and lives. Ask yourself what they need or would like.
  • Remember diet restrictions if you're giving food or drink items. Check with other family members to be sure.
