Have wild cats or kittens in your garage or barn and want to catch them for relocation or even to give to someone who dares to tame them. I have a humane way to do this.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Live Trap
  • Bait
  • Leather Gloves
Step1
Observe the cats or kittens you want to trap, if there are nursing kittens then you will need to get the mother cat as well. Count the number of kittens to make sure you get them all. Cats have paths they travel around and inside buildings. Make a mental note of their travel habits.
Step2
This is what a live trap looks like. You can obtain a live trap from most local police department animal control officer or you can get one from here http://www.wildlife-traps.com/
You will now set and bait the trap, most cats are pretty smart and won't walk right in. You may have to disguise it along side a wall so it looks like they're running into a tunnel.
Step3
Wait and check the trap a couple of times per day. When you catch your kitty then you will need the leather gloves to carry or remove the feline from the trap. Most cats are real mad when they caught in a trap so approach with caution, cover the trap with a towel or blanket when transporting to help calm the cat down.

Tips & Warnings

  • I've caught wild cats with leather gloves before but like I said they are real mad and will rip your arms and hands to shreds if they get ahold of you.
  • The leather gloves can be bitten through so rabies might be something else to be aware of
  • Claws are sharp and WILL be used against you

on 12/6/2007 Excellent point about the carnage that cats wreak on local wildlife. My roommate's cat is an outdoor cat and has dispatched numerous squirrels, birds, mice, etc....

on 11/21/2007 No kidding, cats will claw when mad! The leather gloves are a good idea, but so is a thick quilted jacket and other protection. Also, I've sometimes wrapped a large towel around an angry cat, which disarms all but the mouth, in order to get them into a cat carrier. Rabies is no joke, so heavy leather gloves are a good idea.
