Cleaning central humidifiers is an important step in up keep but often overlooked.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Turn off power to heater and humidifier. Turn humidistat off. Turn off water supply to humidifier.

  2. Step 2

Remove access to humidifier pad and remove pad and all other removable parts.

  3. Step 3

Mix some 4x base cleaner (available at HVAC supply houses) or bleach with water. Mixture should be about 15 parts water to 1 base cleaner and about the same for bleach.

  4. Step 4

Spray mixture on to all parts with scale and scrub with sponge and paper towels. Make sure you have rubber gloves on to avoid chemical burn. Rinse and repeat until scale is gone.

  5. Step 5

Replace humidifier pad if applicable or clean in the same manner. Put everything back together. Turn on water supply and humidistat. Turn on power and test out. This process should prevent any type of water leak. Be sure, if your humidifier has a float valve that the water shuts off completely before walking away. I have been doing heating and air work for about 4 years and this is the best way I know of to clean your humidifier.
