The number of telecommuters or people that work from home is growing every year. Work from home is not just for those that want pocket change anymore. You can actually make full time income and have a career working from home. Some people decide to telecommute due to health problems, caring for a loved one or simply to avoid office politics. Regardless of the reason you want to telecommute, it’s a fact that it is not for everyone. It is important that you know whether telecommuting is for you before making such a drastic change. The following points will help you in this regard.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer
  • Firewall
  • Virus protection
  • High speed internet
  • Paid E-mail Account
  • Dedicated telephone line
  • Printer
  • Fax machine
  • Scanner
Step1
Know yourself. Make sure you can work independently for extended periods without social interaction. If you need constant supervision or constant interaction, telecommuting may not be for you.
Step2
Determine how much you need to earn and whether you can go for a while without making that kind of money. Working from home and telecommuting opportunities are out there but it can take weeks, months or longer to find a good position.
Step3
Decide whether you are willing to do customer service. A customer service position is sometimes the easiest and quickest way to start your work from home career. Once you have income coming in, you can search for a different position if you’re not satisfied with doing customer service
Step4
Be Realistic. Working from home sounds appealing but it has its pros and cons. You need to stay focused in order to get the work done and meet deadlines. You also need organizational skills to succeed.
Step5
Consider the need to have more than one contract if you are going to work as a contractor. This will provide several streams of income in case you should lose one. Searching for work at home positions takes time—make sure that you will be in a position to do this.
Step6
Make sure you have the necessary equipment such a computer with a firewall, virus protection, high-speed internet and a paid E-mail account. You will also need a dedicated telephone line, a headset, and a printer. Depending on the position, you might also need a fax machine and a scanner.
Step7
Setup your workstation. If you decide to do customer service, make sure you have a quiet room to work in. Most companies do not want any background noise such as babies crying, dogs barking, or people talking.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you decide that telecommuting is for you, don’t rush into it. Take your time.
  • There are good work at home forums where you can gain knowledge and insight. Take the time to do your research
  • Remember not to pay for a position. Legitimate companies do not charge unless it’s a business opportunity.
  • No one gives money away. If you’re promised thousands of dollars for a few hours of work, chances are that it is a scam.
  • Beware of scams that want you to process payments, receive and forward packages or send mass emails for them.
