Step1
Go through several different runs to make sure that your Xbox 360 is really broken. For example, if you’re getting an error message when you put in a disc, try a different one. The problem can sometimes be the game you’re playing and not the console.
Step2
Look here for the Xbox 360 serial number.
Gather your serial number. Before calling Microsoft, make sure that you write down the serial number of your console. This is found on the back of the system.
Step3
Contact Microsoft. Although you can contact Microsoft through email, they will only take care of repairing an Xbox 360 over the phone. Call (800) 4MY-XBOX and describe the problem to the technician.
Step4
Receive shipping box from Microsoft. After you talk to a Microsoft customer service representative, they will ship a box to you. This box is used when you send your system back to them for repair. They provide postage and tape for sealing the box so that you don’t have to pay for anything.
Step5
Prepare Xbox 360 for shipment. With the shipment box, you’ll also get instructions for sending your system. The most important thing to do is remove any accessories. Be sure to keep hard drives, games, cords,controllers, and personalized faceplates.
Step6
Ship Xbox 360. Once you have your console boxed up, you’ll need to bring it to UPS. Although Microsoft pays for the shipping of your defective Xbox 360, you still need to get it to the shipping company. Luckily, it’s relatively easy to find UPS stores in most cities.
Step7
Watch the status of your shipment on the service website that Microsoft provides. Log on to http://service.xbox.com to see how the repair process is going. You should typically receive your fixed Xbox 360 in a few weeks. The whole process should take about a month.

on 11/13/2008 I am so glad I read this article. We viewed how to repair our Xbox on another site but it was not very easy. Of course it is not cheap to replace. But with a simple and easy call to Microsoft I learned it was still under warranty and it would be taken care of.

on 11/11/2007 You know my husband bought a second one when the first one broke...he should have done this. Hedid say he called, not sure what happened. I hope it isn't too late for him to send it for repairs...:(
