Step 1
Shop at stores that DON’T specialize in hobby items. Scrapbook, craft, and paper stores have popped up all over and offer a wide array of supplies. However, you’ll pay much more for some of the same items that are sold in discount stores. Shop around. Big Lots is a wonderful source for scrapbooks, notions, and paper. Walmart is another great alternative for things like scissors, stickers, and other paper items. Stores like Target and K-Mart have frequent sales on their scrapbook merchandise, and much of their stock is the same being offered at high-end specialty stores.

Step 2
Check out the hardware store. Tags, embellishments, and eyelets can all be found for much less. I’ll give you a hint: This is the place many scrapbook companies first got the idea for their higher priced notions.
-
Step 3
Look in a different section of the craft and sewing stores. Scrapbook ribbon can also be found in the sewing department, usually for a lower price. Photo-corners can be found in the frame aisle. Totes can be found in the plastic and container section. Many items are the same or very similar as those packaged as “scrapbook” accessories, and are usually priced much less.
-
Step 4
Sign up for craft store discounts. Stores like Joann Fabrics and Michael’s offer special sales and discounts to those on their mailing list. You can often find popular scrapbook items priced 50% off the original.
-
Step 5
Buy “The Stack.” The Stack usually contains a bulk of coordinating papers for a reduced price. Even if you don’t use all the sheets, you end up paying much less than if you’d purchased them each separately. Some Stacks also come with stickers or velum also. Watch for sales, as these tend to get marked down seasonally.
-
Step 6
Bulk stores. Many stores like Cosco and Sam’s Club sell scissors, markers, and paper at greatly reduced prices. This is a great alternative if you need a larger quantity of one item. For example, purchasing specialty scissors in bulk will net you an overall lower price than if you’d purchase each item separately.
-
Step 7
Rummage and tag sales. Many people buy craft supplies and then never end up using them. Search your neighborhood for folks that may need to lighten their craft load. You can often find brand new items for a song.
-
Step 8
Purchase seasonal items after the fact. Once a season or holiday is over, many stores offer drastic discounts in order to reduce their stock. If you can wait until after the holiday to put your scrapbook pages together, you’re bound to find great deals.
