Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Stop responding. Some negative people enjoy annoying others and they want to get a response from you. Rather than give into their wishes and react, ignore their negative remarks. Since negative people are persistent, this will be hard. However, once they realize that you've stopped responding, they'll get the hint and direct their negative emotions elsewhere.
Step2
Recognize their problem. Persons who constantly express negative emotions are likely unhappy or depressed. Since misery loves company, their primary objective is to make others feel bad. Regardless of what a negative person says or does, stay positive and realize that they have the problem.
Step3
Ask. Inquiring about a negative attitude can solve the problem. For example, ask the person "Is something wrong," or "why are you upset." Some individuals are willing to talk and express the true reason for negative emotions.
Step4
Avoid these persons. Some people are determined to be negative. Thus, any attempt to help or understand the person will fail. In this case, it might be best to avoid the person altogether.
Step5
Be positive. Help a negative person to see his or her good qualities. Some people have a negative outlook and they need a trusted friend to help them see the positive about themselves and others. Every time your friend or relative makes a negative remark, respond with a positive statement.
Step6
Encourage them to get help. Depression and anxiety disorders can trigger negative feelings. Everyone develops a negative attitude from time-to-time. On the other hand, persistent negatively is a sign of a bigger issue, and these persons might need to talk with a professional counselor.
