When you purchase a CD from your favorite artist, you may want to make a backup copy. Creating a burned CD is not illegal, provided you own the CD you're copying. Windows 7 comes with Windows Media Player, a program that is primarily used to play music and video, but is also capable of ripping and burning CDs. In order to burn your own copy of the CD, you'll need a computer with a CD burning drive.

Insert the CD you want to copy the files to. You'll need to have a CD-R or a CD-RW, as these are the only type of CDs that are formatted to allow for copied files.
