How to be memorable

Recently I was at a horse race, "The Hunt" at Far Hills, NJ. It was a charitable event to benefit the Cancer Ward of the local Medical Center. I'd been invited by the sister of a friend. While I was there I bumped into the hostess' husband John, whom I'd met at several "functions" before. He flat out told me that he didn't remember me at all. I reminded him of the conversations we'd had in the past and he said, "You're just not that memorable. You're ordinary and you sort of blend in." Then he compared me to a bad job he'd done in construction. He said, "And I never remember a bad job that I had to work on either." Well, I must tell you reader that this isn't the usual case concerning yours truly, but it made me think about the topic and so travel with me if you will so that we can explore together the ways to be remembered at a party or other function.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Empathy
  • a snappy wardrobe
  • interesting conversational topics
  • sense of place and purpose
  • a watergun
Step1
You're at the party. Be wearing a little better than everyone else. Remember that appearance will make the first impression and you only getr one shot. So, if at all possible try to look as good as you can.
Step2
When meeting people, be certain to remember their names. And when they ask you a question, repeat their name back to them. People love to hear their own name. And it will impress them that you've remembered them, especially if you get called away and then come back to them and remember who and what they do/are/etc. Make a coat rack in your mind and hook details on it..like, exotic belly dancer, huband hal, has three children and one chicken...
Step3
Be a good listener. Even if the man you're talking to has the conversational ability of an eel. If you stay focused on him and what he's saying, he will remember you. And if he doesn't...at least someone will.
Step4
Try to get involved in the conversation. If you know anything about the topic at all, try and play the devil's advocate..for example, if they prefer the hand blower type towel dryers in restrooms as opposed to paper towels, you be the person who doesn't wash your hands at all! Then ask them if they want you to get them some treats from the buffet, and be sure they see you putting your hands all over them. They will not forget you.
Step5
Pay a compliment to the person. Mention how you love something they are wearing or the color of their eyes, or their voice, or the fact that they don't smell as bad as everyone else. People tend to remember people who pay them compliments. Not only that, they tend to like to have you around.
Step6
Be upbeat and fun. Be the first person to dive into the pool, or pull someone out on the dance floor to dance. Be pro-active. Be fun! You will be remembered! And people will tend to put you on their guest lists and you'll have more parties than you can handle!

Tips & Warnings

  • Dress well
  • Try to pay honest compliments
  • Listen intently and remember the details
  • Don't drink too much alcohol!
  • Remember there is a difference between being funny and being a fool
  • don't be "that girl from the party" who ends up in the back room and everybody's darling
  • Try to pay honest compliments, false ones make you look like a phony
  • If you compliment their eye color, make certain they are single and available
  • do not be the first person to arrive or the last person to leave
  • learn to dance
  • learn to sing
  • learn to play a musical instrument (all these things are helpful at parties)
