How to Grill Albacore Tuna Fillets

Although beef burgers and pork ribs may be more traditional family barbecue fare, grilled tuna fillets offer a healthy alternative to fattier, grilled meats. Select a top-quality tuna such as Albacore, popular for its white, meaty flesh and light flavor. Albacore also contains the highest amount of omega-3 fatty acids in the tuna family, according to the Oregon Albacore Commission. Just like regular beef steaks, albacore tuna fillets are fairly simple and quick to prepare on the grill.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 albacore tuna fillets, 3/4-inch thick
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Additional spices (optional)
  • Rinse the albacore tuna fillets under cold water and pat dry with paper towels.

  • Combine 2 tablespoons of olive oil with salt and pepper in a large bowl. Add additional spices if desired.

  • Place the tuna into the marinade, cover and place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Turn over the fillets after 15 minutes.

  • Set the grill for medium-high heat and brush the grates with olive oil.

  • Place the tuna on the grill and cook for two to three minutes on each side. Baste the fillets with leftover marinade as they cook.

Tips & Warnings

  • Overcooking the tuna will make it tough and diminish the flavor.
  • The fillets should be pink in the center when you remove them from the grill.
