Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
All About Love
Speak in soothing tones to your cat and stroke the back of her neck. When the cat looks up and squints, you slightly squint your eyes. You have just told the cat you love her and the cat has reciprocated.
Step2
Purring
A purr is a sign of contentment most of the time. Combined with agitation tail lashing from side to side, it has an entirely different meaning. He is telling you he is upset. Reaching down toward him can be perceived as a threat. Bend down to his level and speak soothingly. A frightened cat should not be picked up to calm him. First calm him by speaking soothingly. Let him come to you when he is ready.
Step3
Meeting a New Kitty
Squat down and turn your side to the kitty. Hold out your fist at your side and avoid eye contact with the cat. The kitty will most likely rub your fist with her face. Do not face her. She will come to you. She sees your fist as the size of another cat's head and does not think of it as threatening.

on 2/23/2008 My cat (my baby) squints at me and I squint back at her. She is getting older and so am I, and I believe we both know that we love each other just by how we look at each other. Great article. Thanks.

on 11/1/2007 excellent information. Being a cat lover for more than half a century, I agree with these actions.
