Alternate Nostril Breathing is a balancing breath exercise, very calming and relaxing, adding clarity and depth to your day.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A steady, harmonious seated position.
  1. Step 1

Take your right hand and bend in the first and second finger. Place the thumb against the right nostril and inhale smoothly, slowly (say, to a count of four if that’s comfortable) through the left.

  2. Step 2

Close off the left with the ring & pinkie (both nostrils are compressed right now) for a retention of comfortable length (you might try one equal to the count for the inbreath).

  3. Step 3

Release the right nostril and exhale - smoothly and slowly for the same count as the inhale - through the right nostril, and observe a rest, or kumbacha of the outbreath, at the bottom, allowing your spirit to reside in the emptiness for a comfortable period of time (again, you might try another count equal to the inbreath).

  4. Step 4

Then inhale through the right nostril, compress it (the left is still compressed from before, so both are closed at the top). Practice a comfortable, non-straining retention full of breath again.

  5. Step 5

Release the left nostril and exhale smoothly for the same count you've been using (four is a good starting place), resting in emptiness at the end of your outbreath.

  6. Step 6

This was one round and it won’t take as long to do as it does to read about. Do about four rounds to start and add as you become familiar and comfortable.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose a length of time for each phase that allows you to explore, but doesn't cause you to strain at any time.
  • Make the phases equal at first.
  • Stop if you feel lightheaded, dizzy, nauseous or uncomfortable in a way which stops you from being observant.
  • Practice with eyes closed at first, then with eyes open and compare your experiences. Be sure your eyes are relaxed.
  • Practice with the mouth closed.
  • Remember to refrain from strain!
  • Pushing will not help you to break habits which have been limiting you - it will only drive them deeper!
