Things You'll Need:
- Paper and pen to help you memorize your key reasons why you should get a raise.
-
Step 1
Be on your very best behavior for at least a month before asking for a pay increase. Don’t be absent, late, moody or argumentative with your supervisor and be a team player even if it is not your strong point.
-
Step 2
Choose a good time of day and plan your location in a private office or area that is away from other people. Let her know in advance that you have something important to discuss with her.
-
Step 3
Be calm, logical and rational when you present your case. Before beginning your request, ask that he hear you out completely before responding to you with an answer.
-
Step 4
Memorize five or six good reasons for asking him for an increase in pay. These should be well thought out compelling reasons and should have nothing to do with your personal financial woes. For example, do not say that you cannot afford to live on your current salary because of your expenses. Do say that you are a very valuable member of his team and that you brought in a 20% increase in sales – for example - on a given item, but only if this is true.
-
Step 5
Allow the boss to absorb the information and to respond. Listen carefully to her response and thank her for taking the time to discuss the matter with you. Be aware that you will not likely get a decision today, as she may not be authorized to give you a raise and will have to go up the chain of command with your request.
-
Step 6
If you are unsuccessful in your efforts, and your boss says it is out of his hands or that his boss said no, tell him you would like to speak to the manager personally to present your case. Allow him to participate in the meeting as well. Follow through on doing this. If you are refused, be cordial, polite and reasonable.
-
Step 7
Even if you do not get the raise, if you handle yourself well and act maturely, you will score respect points with your superiors. Realize that sometimes company policy may stand in the way of granting off-cycle pay increases.
-
Step 8
If you are really dissatisfied with your situation, look elsewhere. Find a better opportunity where you do feel wanted and appreciated for your efforts.
-
Step 9
Keep in mind that you will not get a raise if you don't ask for one and it doesn't hurt to ask. Good luck with your efforts!

on 6/18/2009 Fantastic article. Another thing is to not be nervous when you ask. If you get the raise, YAY! If not, try again in 6 months or try for a higher position. A lot of companies aren't giving raises this year because of the economy. 5* and I recommended you. =)
