How to Make An Edible Shaving Cream

If you can eat it, it must be good on your skin, right? Well, that's stretching it a bit, but this is a recipe just as tasty as it is good on your skin! This is a recipe for shaving cream, inspired by one of my All-Time favorite movies, Practicial Magic. It barely gets mention in the film (as in no ingredients or method is given), but when I needed to shave my legs again, I threw this together for the heck of it...and I was impressed! It comes out thick and creamy, I got a nice close shave, and the oatmeal/mint combo is great for your skin! I stress the use of organic materials to minimize the chance that any chemicals or antibiotics were used in the upbringing of the animals they're coming from. Give it a try and tell me what you think...taste it too!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Mortar and Pestle
  • Electric Mixer
  • One cup of Plain Rolled Oats
  • A handful of dried mint leaves
  • Small Container of ORGANIC heavy whipping cream
  • 1 ORGANIC egg white

Step1
Use the mortar and pestle to grind Oats and Mint into a fine powder, or at least as fine as you can get it. This will probably be the longest part of the creation process. Put the ground ingredients to the side.
Step2
Using the mixer, beat the egg white until stiff peaks form, a little thicker consistency than a meringue. Then, in a separate bowl, beat the whipping cream until it becomes a foamy whipped cream. You may need to add a pinch of oats/mint to help it along.
Step3
Combine the egg whites with the whipped cream; whip together on a medium speed. As you're whipping, gradually add the dry ingredients. When completed, the mixture will be thick and creamy, sort of frothy (sort of like dispensed shaving cream). It's ready for use!

Tips & Warnings

  • Put any unused shaving cream in the fridge. It's all natural with zero preservatives or additives, so obviously it won't keep too long.
  • Add a couple of drops of peppermint oil. It won't be edible, but using a peppermint essential oil will add an extra bit of fragrance, and it great for the skin.
  • You can still find those 'old school' shaving cream brushes to use for application. If not, do what I do: I use a large, firm blush brush for applying the cream.
  • I typically use organic ingredients, but people with skin allergies should always test it on a small patch of skin to be sure you don't break out. Granted, the oatmeal is something that has been kind to sensitive skin, but better to be safe than sorry.
