Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- DVDs
- Someplace to watch the films
- Food and drink
- Props (?)
Step1
Come up with a theme. For aficionados, ‘Horror’ isn’t just blood and guts. Do you want Classic horror like ‘Nosferatu’ or Modern horror, such as ‘Hatchet’? Foreign monsters from Dario Argento, or Texas-bred psychopaths like Leatherface? Or make it easy on yourself and go for a ‘sampler,’ choosing one film from a few different categories.
Step2
Gather some snacks and drinks. Popcorn is always a staple, but be adventurous. Try to tailor your menu to the theme of the night. If it’s a Zombie night, make guacamole and mix in some plastic eyeballs. Nothing says fun like a fake finger mixed in with the buffalo wings. Look for drinks in the same vein (pun intended?) Things like Bloody Marys (virgin or not) and strawberry daiquiris add to the ambience, and taste good.
Step3
Decorate the house. It doesn’t have to be elaborate; sometimes, a few well-placed candles can do wonders. If the night is apocalyptic, leave a few empty cardboard boxes and tins cans (without the labels) lying around. If it’s teen-slasher, cut holes in a few t-shirts and splatter them with red food coloring.
Step4
Dressing the part is encouraged! Actually, no; it’s required. Get into the spirit of it! To give incentive, offer a prize for best dressed. You can find ‘Horror Bonus Packs’ at many electronic and movie stores, where they put between 2 and 4 different films on one DVD and sell it for a few dollars. Many times, also, there will be a few gems on these discs. Pick one up for your next horror night.
Step5
Find a partner in crime. Get a friend to ‘grab some more popcorn’ a few minutes before a good scary part happens. Have them wait around the corner listening, then jump back in the room right as the scary part comes for some extra screams.
