Got a run in your favorite sweater? Fortunately, it can be fixed in no time.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Crochet hook
  • Color matched thread
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  1. Step 1

Find the side of the sweater where the rows look like they run vertically around the run. That's the side you want to work on.

  2. Step 2

Carefully inspect the start of the run. There should be one or more broken stitches that caused the run to start. Find them and pin them together for temporary stability.

  3. Step 3

Find the bottom of the run. There should be at least one stitch that hasn't come out yet, but will soon. Carefully insert the crochet hook through that loop, catch the next loose thread with the hook end, and pull it through the loop. Repeat until you get back up to the broken stitch.

  4. Step 4

Leave the crochet hook in the last whole loop as a place holder. Working carefully, to not let any more yarn get loose, sew the broken stitch back together on what will be the wrong side of the garment. Use good sturdy thread and repeat the stitches a few times. Don't pull the thread so tightly that it distorts the knit fabric. Knot the thread securely and cut.

  5. Step 5

Once the repair is done, take one more crochet stitch with the last loop into the wrong side of the fabric. You will have a dangling loop. With the thread, stitch the last loop down to the wrong side of the fabric several times, again being careful to not distort the fabric. Once sewn well, knot the thread securely and cut the remainder off.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use good quality cotton thread for the repair.
  • Make sure the colors are matched as well as possible.
  • Be sure to use the appropriate sized crochet hook. A hook that is too small will be difficult to work with, and a hook that is too large can distort the knit fabric around the run.
