Things You'll Need:
- Patience
- A toilet
- A kitty litter box
- Kitty litter
- Water
- A metal mixing bowl the same diameter as your toilet
-
Step 1
Begin by teaching your cat to use a regular kitty box. If the kitty is littered train there is no way you can train him/her to use the toilet.
-
Step 2
Slowly begin moving his litter box closer to the toilet. You may even want to slowly begin raising the level of the kitty box. You can do this by adding books or whatever underneath the litter box to make it higher. Just watch that the box doesn’t slide. Keep raising the level of the box until it is the same height as the toilet bowl.
-
Step 3
Get rid of the litter box completely. Place a metal mixing bowl the same width as your toilet bowl inside of it so it fits securely. Make sure you add plenty of litter to the bowl. Leave the lid that we women uses to sit on down for kitty.
Now show kitty his/her new bowl.
Kitty will wonder. If you can, place kitty on top of the toilet. Hopefully, he/she will start sniffing and recognize the smell of the litter and get the point. -
Step 4
Place kitty onto the toilet. Show him/her how to position his/her feet.
The first time he/she tries to use the bowl him/herself the feet position may not be correct. Let it go. But the next time, try to show him/her the proper stance.
Praise kitty for getting onto the toilet. -
Step 5
Slowly begin decreasing the amount of litter you put into the bowl. Be sure to empty the bowl as soon as kitty is finished.
-
Step 6
Once you get down to a tablespoon of water, begin adding water to the bowl. Kitty may not be happy. Start with a little water.
If kitty is smart, he/she will realize that the water is helping to minimize the odor. He/she will like this fact.
If Kitty stops using the bowl because of the water, take a break and go back to the small amount of litter without water for a few days and then try again. -
Step 7
Slowly add more water, if kitty is comfortable.
-
Step 8
If you make it where the water is about three inches deep in the bowl, kitty may be ready to go without the bowl. Take away the bowl and see if Kitty still uses the toilet.
If he does congratulations, you have toilet trained your cat. If he doesn’t, put the bowl back and try again in a few days.

on 10/5/2009 Our cat enjoys hanging out on the toilet already. I'm so going to try this as my goal is to have all members of my family (furry or not) using the potty. ;-) 5*, bookmarked. My kitty litter budget thanks you.
