Design a Martial Arts Gym at Home

Dedicated martial artists know the importance of practicing the sport outside of the dojo. Many martial artists find that practicing at home allows them to develop and hone their skills. Fortunately, you can easily create a martial arts gym at home.

From Quick Guide: Home Gym Setup Guide
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Heavy bag
  • Double end bag
  • Dark tape
  • Mirror
  • Floor mat
  • Accessories
  1. Step 1

Find the space. A small spare room can be turned into a martial arts gym. Other options include a basement or garage.

  2. Step 2

Install a heavy bag. Heavy bags are great tools for developing power in your kicks and punches. Install a heavy bag from the ceiling (or buy one on a stand) for this type of practice.

  3. Step 3

Install a double-end bag. Double-end bags are similar to speed bags, except they're secured at both the top and the bottom. They're hung with elastic rope so the bag sways when it's punched, which helps martial artists develop speed and reflexes. Install the double-end bag a few steps away from the heavy bag.

  4. Step 4

Place tape on the walls. Use short pieces of dark tape--like duct tape--to mark spots on a wall or pole. You can then use these bits of tape as targets when you shadow box or kick.

  5. Step 5

Hang a mirror. A mirror is a vital part of martial arts training, since it allows you to see your form. Hang a full length mirror in the part of the room that has space for practicing your kicks or katas.

  6. Step 6

Lay down a mat. If your floor is hard--like hardwood or concrete--lay down a padded mat. This will protect your knees when you practice jump kicks and other plyometric exercises.

  7. Step 7

Buy small accessories. Training gear such as jump ropes and boxing gloves will help supplement your martial arts gym. A few dumbbells or resistance bands may also benefit your training.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider purchasing a book that teaches you how to train for martial arts at home.
  • More space is better, but those with limited space can create a modified version of this home gym.
  • Ask your martial arts instructor for advice about training at home.
  • Practice within your abilities.
  • Always stretch before a workout.
