For many people with the problem of grinding the teeth; to simply stop grinding their teeth is more easier said than done. The condition is referred to as Bruxism. It is a condition whereas people generally grind their teeth in their sleep. Untreated, bruxism can lead to severely worn down teeth, headaches, sore necks, sore backs as well as a condition called Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ). There are several things that people can try to stop grinding their teeth.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • apple, cauliflower or raw carrots
  • mouth guard
  • wash cloth

Step1
Keep your mouth rested in a healthy resting position. The top and bottom teeth should only touch when chewing food or swallowing. This will reduce the urge to clench the teeth together and start grinding.
Step2
Eat an apple, cauliflower, carrots or some other crunchy raw vegetable or fruit before going to bed. Doing this may assist in calming down your overactive mouth.
Step3
Relax. Bruxism (grinding the teeth) is often related to stress. Learning to calm down and relax may be the best remedy for teeth grinding problems.
Step4
Apply heat to your jaws. Run very warm to hot water over a washcloth, squeeze it dry and apply it to each side of your face. Do this often. It will relax the clenching muscles.
Step5
If necessary, invest in a mouth guard to protect your teeth when sleeping. You may want to visit your dentist so that he can custom make you one.

on 12/10/2007 I ate through 4 three hundred dollar mouth braces and finally bought a $7 dollar football mouth guard. It gagged me so much at night that my jaw gave up clenching knowing I would wear it until the bruxism stopped.

on 11/16/2007 using a warm press on your face doesnt really do anything. I used some of the exercises at www.cureforbruxism.com and they helped me a lot. The "hold and streach" method really seems to work for me.
