If you don't have enough nerve to stand in front of students and express yourself and present the lesson plan, you need to try and see what is hindering you from being successful. The students are unruly, and some of them are gang members. You are probably somewhat uneasy and afraid. Students can sense your personality immediately, they can read your expressions, your eyes, and voice tone. Sharpened up your wits. They are only kids. Decide if you know enough about the subject matter. Remember there are some students who probably read the lesson before coming to school. Just because they joined a gang, doesn't mean that they are dumb. To the contrary, they used organizational skills to accomplish the joining or running of the gangs. Remember the organization is being done all over the United States. There is no place to run and hide, you will probably encounter some gang activities. I know that in most affluent communities, you won't find many gang members. If you went to war you could not afford to be afraid, and so don't be afraid now. You are putting yourself on line teaching. Think with confidence, and present yourself accordingly. Kids are very preceptive, the same as the other teachers that you will working with. Smile often, the task is not that bad, and you won't want them to know that you feel uneasy. Yes, we have been called names, right to our face. Ignore them. Ignore all of the nasty things they do. Tell them that they can be written up and send to the office, or suspended from school. Or that you will be calling the parents and telling them about their bad conduct. Sometimes this works, to use the threat method. This should be the last straw. You are a professional and don't let them bring you down. Teaching is a masterful position, and no one said that it was easy.
