Grandmothers. Sweet as pie and sour as lemons, elderly ladies have the uncanny ability to be both charming and cantankerous at the same time. Here's how to survive travel with your grandmother, or any elderly person.

From Quick Guide: Travel 101
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Patience
  • A sense of humor
  • Possibly tickets to Wayne Newton in Vegas
  1. Step 1

Plan the trip as far in advance as possible. Book everything down to the last detail. Going by plane? Book first class seats, or seats as close to the front of the plane as possible, and let customer service know that you are traveling with a senior. Driving? Make sure you have a cushy ride that is easy to get in and out of.

  2. Step 2

Food. No one focuses on their mealtimes like a senior citizen, as it is a major source of pleasure for many. Make sure you are aware of any diet restrictions (low sodium, diabetic, low fat) and convey these needs to your airline or your hotel staff. Additionally, research restaurants in the area that will cater to your grandma's taste. She will appreciate your efforts here tremendously!

  3. Step 3

Re-adjust your timing. Generally speaking, senior citizens like to get a jump on their day, and turn in earlier at night than younger people. Be prepared for early morning breakfasts and 5:00pm dinners during your trip, as you will be far more flexible than Granny.

  4. Step 4

Health and Safety. Do you know CPR? Should you? How is your senior's health overall? What about medications or allergies? If you are heading out for more than a day trip, be prepared to manage some health care issues should the need arise. Have her doctor's phone number too.

  5. Step 5

Your Sanity. You've done your research and covered all of your bases, from Granny's sugar cravings to her need to play Bingo till the wee hours of the early evening. Reward yourself with something special for being such a good grandchild. Face it--- getting old can be the pits, and hanging out with Grandma is very good... for the both of you!

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your senior's health information with you at all times
  • Be patient and have fun!
  • Sit up straight and be polite. She'll remind you to anyway.
  • Don't loose your cool. She'll never let you forget it.
  • Don't drink too much or behave badly. Again, her once spotty memory will be razor sharp on this trip.
