Having the proper stained glass supplies and keeping them clean are crucial steps in producing quality results. How to make stained glass well is not only determined by how skilled you are at handling the tools, but also knowing how to clean them. Stained glass artisans rely on creativity and tools to provide lasting works of art worthy of displaying in any structure.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Wet sponge
  • Oil and kerosene mix
  • liquid wrench lubricant or rust remover
  • Zip-lock bags of all sizes
  • Water source

Step1
Soldering irons and their tips (solders) are used to heat and mold the copper foil that hold stained glass designs in place. After use, wipe the tip on a wet sponge.
Step2
Glass cutters separate the stained glass into individual pieces. The actual cutting process resembles scratching, or scoring the glass. With pressure, the stained glass will break away in a straight line, following the shape in which it was scored. When not in use, and between uses, keep the cutter wheel submerged in an oil and kerosene lubricant solution.
Step3
Grozing pliers have serrated jaws used to remove any small pieces of stained glass remaining after scoring and cutting. To keep rust from forming, regularly soak them in liquid wrench lubricant or rust remover.
Step4
Stained glass grinders help smooth jagged edges on the stained glass. While it does not need to be cleaned before and after use, it should always have water in it to coat the surface while grinding.
Step5
Copper foil is the binding that holds the stained glass pieces together. Any left over copper foil should be kept in an airtight bag to prevent oxidation between projects.

Tips & Warnings

  • Failure to keep your stained glass tools clean will result in their damage and cause you to sustain injuries.
