Propane Regulator
Propane Regulator

Steps to help make sure your propane regulator does not freeze up.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hand tools
  1. Step 1

Your first step is to make sure that the propane tank is mounted so that the top or the outlet of the tank is at the highest point. Therefore you will ensure that only vapor comes out and into the regulator and not liquid.

  2. Step 2

You will need to make sure that you have a cover over the regulator. Actually a cover is required for outdoor regulators in most areas.

  3. Step 3

There is a vent hole located in the regulator. It's a good idea, if it's possible, to locate this vent hole down. This will allow moisture to drain out of the regulator vent chamber.

  4. Step 4

If all else fails, you can switch your system to a two-stage regulated system. In a single stage system the high pressure is converted to low pressure very rapidly which causes that point to become very cold. In a two-stage system the pressure is reduced in two steps therefore there is less chance for it to freeze up.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cut gas off and drain pressure from lines before being any service.
  • Check for leaks with soap and water
  • Make sure your work area is well ventilated
  • Do not use any tools that may cause sparks
