Running is a high impact sport, and just like the proper pair of shoes, a great-fitting and comfortable bra is essential to a great run.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Shop at a running or specialty sports store, where an experienced salesperson can help you find the best sports bra for your size, training program and comfort.

  2. Step 2

Know your bra size. Over 80 percent of women wear the wrong regular bra size, so make sure you've been fitted for a bra and know your proper size before shopping. Some women may fit fine into the standard small, medium and large sizes, while other may need to buy a sports bra in the corresponding band and cup size.

  3. Step 3

Look for maximum support. Running is a high impact sport, and your sports bra should keep motion to a minimum. A standard shelf-bra camisole is neither practical nor comfortable for long runs. Most sports bras will list the support level on the product tag.

  4. Step 4

Search for the right fabrics. Look for sports bras with moisture-wicking fabrics to cool your body and a bit of stretch for comfort and proper fit.

  5. Step 5

Try on several different types of sports bras from a variety of manufacturers. Styles range from the traditional compression bras, to those with molded cups and underwire, with everything from racer backs to hook closures and adjustable straps. Determine which types of bras fit best and feel most comfortable.

  6. Step 6

Take your bra for a "test" run. Jog in place in the dressing room and jump up and down to ensure that the bra provides enough support, doesn't itch or chafe and stays in place.

  7. Step 7

Care for your bras. Follow the cleansing instruction on the tag, which generally advise machine washing on cold and either air drying or tumble drying on low. Replace your sports bras if they lose their stretch or fit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Purchase two or three different styles and test them on short runs to ensure proper fit and comfort.
  • Use petroleum jelly on potential trouble spots to avoiding chaffing and bleeding.
  • Buy several bras in one style if you find one that works for you.
