How to Remember the Planets in Order

Instructions

1. You can learn the order of the eight planets fairly easily (Pluto was demoted in 2006) by learning just one short, simple sentence:
   My Very Educated Mother Just Saw Uncle Nick.

2. M - Mercury -closest to the sun
   V - Venus
   E - Earth
   M - Mars
   J - Jupiter
   S - Saturn
   U - Uranus
   N - Neptune - farthest from the sun

3. There's no easy way to remember which "M" is Mars and which is Mercury. The only thing I can think of (and perhaps the best way) is to think of the mercury inside a thermometer and think of Mercury being very hot because it is close to the sun, and therefore first.

   Note: In 2006, Pluto, formerly the ninth planet, was demoted to the status of dwarf planet. That is why it is not featured on this ehow article.

4. Another great way to remember the planets in order is by creating your own helpful sentence. By making it your own, you are less likely to forget it. Try to include the names of people close to your in your life to make it more personal, like this:

   Mrs. Vasquez Eats Many Juniper Seeds Until Nurished.

   Knowing someone named Mrs. Vasquez will help you picture him eating the seeds and the funny image will help you (or a child) recall it easier for a test. Notice that the word "Mrs." is just missing one letter to spell out "Mars", and that "many" ends with a "Y", just like Mercury. This helps you remember which M is which.

Tips & Warnings

• If you only memorize the letters and not the sentence, remember that SUN comes at the end. Surely if you're learning astronomy you'll be able to remember the sun.

• Don't mistakenly add Pluto to the end!
