How to Write a Book for Publication

  1. Step 1

Choose the age group of your reader that you will be writing for, ie: preschooler, middle schooler, teens 12-18, adult.

  2. Step 2

Start reading books in that age category to familiarize yourself with the subject interests of this age group, and how these novels are written, formatted and presented.

  3. Step 3

Go to the bookstore or library and get an updated issue on publishing markets for books in your chosen age category. This will outline the subjects of interest that they are accepting at this time, and then you can choose your subject accordingly.

  4. Step 4

Prepare to send your manuscript to several of these publishers that you have selected, taking note as to whether they initially require a full manuscript or synopsis.

  5. Step 5

When you have finished writing, have several people read your manuscript for grammatical and spelling errors, realism and accuracy so that it is properly set out before it goes to the publisher.

  6. Step 6

Copy-right your manuscript before you submit it to the publisher although many publishers will inherit your copy-rights upon acceptance.

Tips & Warnings
  • A publisher will not correct or edit your material; they will only accept or reject it so make sure your submission is carefully edited.
  • Make sure your facts for non-fiction are accurate and accompanied by documented resources. Refer to the market book for clarification on what sources for your facts are acceptable.
  • Publishers rarely accept pictures or drawings within a book by the author; they hire illustrators to do that, and in turn, these illustrators will receive a portion of the book royalties because they are considered partners in the production of your book.
