To plant a privacy hedge is pretty simple - but it does take some time. It is a nice way to create a border that is fast growing and beautiful! It is a good wind barrier and is good for the environment! I highly recommend using the Arborvitae "Green Giant", but you can check with your local nursery for a tree suited to your growing conditions.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Enough trees for two rows with 6 feet between each tree
  • Shovel

Step1
Mark a straight line Measure out the length of border you would like to plant. Now mark the line with a spray paint or garden hose or rope - just something to help you keep a straight line.
Step2
Staggered Planting Dig holes for the trees in a staggered pattern for quick privacy. The holes should be at least 6 feet apart in both directions. Measure the root balls of the trees and dig the holes 2-3 times the width.
Step3
Tree planting Chart I suggest planting the Arborvitae, "Green Giant" as it is attractive to songbirds, is resistant to bag worms, deer resistant, and pest resistant! Remove the plants from their planting pot and place the root ball in the ground, tamping the dirt firmly around the tree.
Step4
Water Thoroughly! Now water thoroughly every couple of days until the roots have been established.

Tips & Warnings

  • Prune out dead branches
  • Mulch if desired for extra aesthetics.
