If you belong to a Yahoo group (or several) you may find your email box full when you come back from time away! It's easy to forget you signed up for individual emails, but there are two simple ways of dealing with this problem...

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • computer
  • yahoo username and password
  • about 3 minutes
  • deep breathing!
  1. Step 1

First, go online and go to http://www.groups.yahoo.com. If you need to sign in, put in your username and password. I keep mine in a card index next to my computer! If you've forgotten your password that's o.k, hit the link and it will be sent to you. (You may have to delete a few emails immediately if there's really no room left to receive any!)

  2. Step 2

At the top of the yahoo group page you see 'Edit Membership'. Click on that.

  3. Step 3

Scroll down to 'Step Two - Message Delivery'. There you have 4 options, each with a circle next to them. You'll notice you've chosen 'Individual Email' (if there's a black dot in the circle next to it.) So now, and every time before you go away, choose either 'daily digest', 'special notices' or 'web only'. That will cut emails down to one a day (daily digest) or possibly none. You can then visit the group online and catch up with what's happening until you want to receive individual notices again. You can do that while you're away at an internet cafe, too!

  4. Step 4

Now, to deal with a current overload, you can use the sort function in Outlook Express to pick out all the messages from your group. Just click at the top of the Inbox where it says 'From'. All your emails will magically sort themselves in alphabetical order and you can scan the ones from your group; to delete a block of emails, hold down the shift key and then highlight the first and last in the group you want to delete. Then you can just click once and they're all gone to the deleted folder. Don't forget you can retrieve anything from there later if you make a mistake. Click on the 'Received' box at the top right when you want to go back to seeing emails in the order they're received.

  5. Step 5

At any time you can go back to http://www.groups.yahoo.com, sign in and change back to daily notification if you want. Practice doing it a few times so you know how easy it is! And don't forget to switch from daily notifications every time you go away for more than a day or two.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hint: Scanning emails very quickly is a good way of letting your subconscious show you any messages you really want to read! One or two will just catch your attention - you can read them and happily delete the rest to free up space in your inbox.
  • Remember you can always go to the Deleted folder to see the emails - or view them online.
  • Do stay calm - don't feel overwhelmed or anxious! Remember you're in control and you can choose how many emails to receive, or none, at any time. And all the chat and info is there online for you when you want to read it!
