Kids can enjoy theatre too!

Whether it's a play, musical, Barney, or any live performance, introducing your child to the magic of live theatre and concerts at any early age can instill a passion that can last his entire life. It may be difficult to get little ones to sit still, but preparation is half the battle.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Discuss proper behavior prior to walking in the door.

  2. Step 2

Keep the discussion lively. Your enthusiasm will rub off.

  3. Step 3

Explain that unlike a movie, you're seeing a live performance. Quiet is encouraged out of respect for the performers and fellow audience members.

  4. Step 4

Children should remain in their seat. Most theatres have booster seats if your child can't see. If not, place them in your lap. This will also help calm down children who become antsy.

  5. Step 5

Don't allow food and drinks into the theatre. Though many theatres permit them, especially after intermission, candy wrappers or a cup that spills in the middle of a performance is very disruptive.

  6. Step 6

Go to the bathroom prior to the show. It's very difficult to squeeze past the other people in your row without disturbing everyone onstage and in the audience. If you must leave in the middle of a performance, watch from the back of the theatre when you return until an appropriate break.

  7. Step 7

Be engaged! Laughter, applause and discussions after the performance are encouraged!
