Make fizzy bath bombs to give as holiday gifts or to pamper yourself! Make the bath soothing and relaxing by using lavender or chamomile flowers and fragrance or invigorating by using green tea or peppermint.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 cups baking soda (a little more than one box)
  • 2/3 cup citric acid (available at some health food stores or on line sites)
  • 1/3 cup corn starch
  • fragrance oil (10-12 drops should do it)
  • witch hazel in a small spray bottle
  • additives-- like green tea, peppermint tea or chamomile tea from tea bags, lavender flowers, etc.
  • a bath bomb mold, or two "bottoms" from plastic Easter eggs
  1. Step 1

In a large bowl, mix together the baking soda, citric acid, cornstarch, fragrance oil, and herbs.

  2. Step 2

Using the spray bottle, spritz the mixture with witch hazel while continuously mixing.

  3. Step 3

The mixture will begin to get the texture of snow and clump when squeezed in your hand. At this point, attempt to smoosh the mixture into the mold and then carefully unmold onto your paper-lined cookie sheet or tray.

  4. Step 4

If the bomb falls apart or will not correctly unmold, the mixture may be too dry—continue to spritz with witch hazel until you get a consistency that molds and unmolds easily.

  5. Step 5

Leave the tray or cookie sheet of bath bombs in a dry, safe place for several days. This recipe makes about 32 fizzy bath bombs.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have cuts or scratches on your hands, you might wear gloves. Citric acid is natural and not harmful, but it can burn if it contacts cuts!
  • Make sure your hands are dry when you are mixing the dry ingredients— moisture triggers the fizzy reaction between the baking soda and citric acid.
  • The drying time for the bombs depends on the humidity in the air—it would take a longer time for the bath bombs to set in Miami, a shorter time in Tucson.
