Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Your cat
- Nail clippers (ones for cats is preferred)
Step1
Your first step is going to take place long before the day of clipping. When your cat is asleep, this really only works if the cat is heavy sleeper, starting by holding your cat's paw. This will tell you if your cat is okay with you touching their paw. If they pull away, don't push it. Go do something around the house and come back and try again. You repeat this step until your cat doesn't pull away and gets used to you holding their paw.
Step2
Once your cat becomes accustom to you holding their paw while they sleep, you need to decide when you are going to clip their nails. Pick a day where you have plenty of time because it could take awhile to get them done.
Step3
When you are ready to clip your cat's nails, wait for your cat to fall asleep. Sit, or lay next to your cat. When I cut my cat's nails, it is always on the bed so I lay next to her.
Step4
If you have one of those specialty cat nail clippers, hold onto your cat's paw lightly and slip the nails one-by-one into the nail clipper and squeeze the clippers. You should never cut off more then just the tip of your cat's nails. If you cut to far down you can cut a vein and have to take your cat to the vet.
Step5
This could be a long process. If your cat wakes up or moves their paw, don't press it. Be happy that you at least got a few nails cut, or a whole paw. The cat has to sleep again sometime.
