You must have Google Talk installed. This setting change is very easy to accomplish if you know where to make your change. Double click on the Google Talk icon on the task bar.

Now choose settings. Under the General tab make sure you check off the Open GMail when I click on email links. Click OK.

  3. Step 3
Check the Open Gmail when I click on email links option box.

To get this setting change to apply I've normally had to shut down and restart MS Internet Explorer. Sometimes I've had to restart the system to get the setting to apply.

Tips & Warnings
  • This allows you to use Google Mail (GMail) instead of having to use MS Outlook or Outlook Express when clicking on mailto: links.
  • Google Notifier has this option available as well.
  • If you have installed Google Talk uninstall Google Notifier as it is now redundant and unnecessary.
  • Note: Right clicking on this desktop icon does not bring up Options or Preferences or Settings windows as one would expect.
