Make Sacher torta

Sacher torta is the most famous Austrian dessert. And while I love having Sacher torta every time I go to Vienna, I have found a recipe so I can have that Viennese feeling at home too.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 8 eggs
  • 200 grams sugar
  • 60 grams powdered chocolate
  • 120 grams all purpose flour
  • 100 grams softened butter
  • 50 grams biscuit crumbs
  • 1 cup apricot jam
  • Good quality chocolate frosting
  1. Step 1

Preheat the oven to 200°c (392°F) and butter the cake pan.
Separate egg yolks and whites in 2 bowls.

  2. Step 2

Mix egg whites until light and fluffy. In second bowl mix egg yolks with sugar.

  3. Step 3

Sift powdered chocolate with flour and add to the yolks mixture. Blend well with softened butter and add biscuit crumbs.

  4. Step 4

Pour in the mixture in the baking pan and bake for about 40 minutes.

  5. Step 5

After the cake is done, leave in the oven for a little while and then transfer to the cooling rack. Leave it for at least 6 hours.

  6. Step 6

Cut the cake horizontally once and cover the lower half with warmed up apricot jam. Top with the upper half and use the rest of the jam to cover the sides of the cake.

  7. Step 7

Cover with chocolate frosting and mark the servings with the knife.

Tips & Warnings
  • For this cake you can use 2 8-inch round cake pans or one 10-inch spring form pan. However, if you are in a hurry, you can use a simple 11x7-inch baking dish.
