Want your preschooler to enjoy reading? It is most critical at this stage to want your preschooler to read to you, as much as you read to them. Let your preschooler read stories of interest to them. What does your child like the most?Find books that involve this topic and your child will want to read more and more.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • patience
  • stage 1 or 2 books with large type font
  • child's favorite topic
  1. Step 1

Purchase books that identify themselves as stage one, or beginner. The font is typically larger and the sentences are shorter. This will keep your preschooler' s attention (since their attention span is short) Make sure its something of interest to the child, i.e animals, baseball, power rangers etc.. Have your child help you pick it out

  2. Step 2

Now give yourself about 15-20 minutes to first read the selected books to your child everyday for a week. Make sure you use your fingers to point to each word you read. It would help to read slowly at first. This will help them to recognize the words.

  3. Step 3

Now after your week is done, have your preschooler read back to you. Now you must remember to be patient. Help them with each word they don't recognize right away. Help them sound out each letter if needed. Your child will begin to recognize site words and should be able to read the entire book back to you in a few days.

Tips & Warnings
  • select one book per week to help get your child familiar with all the words
  • Be Patient!! Don't get frustrated if your child forgets words, they will get it soon
  • have your child help you pick his/her favorite topic
  • make sure you can dedicate 15-20 minutes of uninterrupted time to read to your preschooler
  • Yelling or being impatient will only frustrate your preschooler
