How to Stop Computers From Calling Your House

The phone is always ringing and it's always some computer or some telemarketer trying to sell you something. There are actually federal regulations governing telemarketing. The key is keeping track and following up on the most persistent offenders. Here are some tips to help lessen those annoying phone calls.

1. Register on the Do Not Call list. Website: www.donotcall.gov or by phone at [phone]. If you call, call from the phone whose number you wish to register.
2. Whenever you are buying something and filling out a form (credit card, warranty, free drawing, mortgage, among others) make sure to write "Please do not sell my name, phone number and address" across the sheet. Legally, the company is entitled to honor your request.
3. Be pro-active. When a telemarketer calls, interrupt them and say "Please permanently remove me from your calling list."
   
   If the same company calls again, they are in violation of the FCC. Once you have requested a company remove you from their list, if they call you again they can be fined by the FCC, and you can recoup up to $500 dollars. Make a note of the date and time of the unwanted call. You have to file a complaint against the company with the FCC and they will consider your case.
4. Filing a complaint with the FCC: fill out their online complaint Form 1088.

   In your complaint you fill out your name, address, phone and email; list the phone number you're getting the calls on; list whether you're registered on the Do Not Call list; date and time the unwanted call came in.
