How to Find Your Personal Religion

Throughout history, we have been raised to believe in a religion or spirituality. It is sometimes very difficult for us to find our own religious and spiritual truths. Whilst no article can tell you how to go about this, perhaps the reader will find this of use as they try and find a religion to suit themselves.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet or library access
  • An open mind

Step1
Assuming you have one, think on your current religion. What are it's merits as you see it? What are it's cons? Why do you desire to change your religion, or find another one? Write down these questions and answer them if you wish, or just keep the answers in your head. Make sure you keep your answers in mind when you begin your search.
Step2
Conduct some personal research. Look briefly at a few religions and note down the ones that appeal to you. You can find a wealth of material online and most libraries or book stores will have plenty of books on the subject of religion.
Step3
Make a short list of the religions that interested you in your initial study. Go back and look at them in more detail. What Gods do they worship? What are the core ideals of the religion? Above all, do their beliefs match yours? Do you feel like you're connecting with that religion? Once you've done a more indepth study, select a religion(s) you want to learn more about.
Step4
Now that you know what religions seem compatible with you and you've done some factual study, seek out followers of that religion and ask if you could borrow their time to talk about it. If it's Christianity you're looking at for example, you could go to your local Church and see if a Priest could make time for you. If it's Druidry, you could look for local groves and contact a Druid with them. Don't be afraid to probe them in detail. Most will be very glad to help you learn about the religion, especially if you're considering following their path.
Step5
Now that you have a personal account and a factual account, you should experience the religion for itself. Ask if you could observe or even participate in a ceremony or ritual. You might want to consider a trial period of sorts, where you practice the religion for a few weeks to see how well it suits you and how your heart feels about it.
Step6
Look within your heart and soul. After all you've learnt about the religion, if it feels right in your heart, then it's almost certainly the religious path for you. If you're certain you've found your path, then all you need to do is convert - and how you do that depends entirely on you and your new found religion.

Tips & Warnings

  • Meditation can be very useful in discovering a religion that suits you. There are many exercises that can be found online that will help you think on the matter.
  • Remember that, no matter what, this decision must come from your heart.
  • Do NOT allow other people to try and convert you. You only want factual and personal accounts of the religion, not a sermon on why it's the only true path.
