How to Do a Skin Self Exam

This article will teach you step by step in how to do a self skin exam to check and detect signs of skin cancer

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Check for new moles and/or anything different that you notice from the previous skin examination. Look all over the body including the scalp, back, genitalia and between the buttocks, finger nails.

  2. Step 2

    Check for new red or darker color patches or raised flaky areas on the body. Look to see if there are any new flesh-colored firm bumps and any sores that does not heal.

  3. Step 3

    Look to see any changes in size, shape, color, or feel of a mole or skin tags. look at face, neck, ears and scalp. It may help to use a comb to separate the hair so you can see the scalp better.

  4. Step 4

    Look at the front and back of the body in a full length mirror. Next, raise your arms and look at your right and left sides. Bend your elbows and check the underarms and fingernails, palms, and forearms.

  5. Step 5

    Look and examine the front, back and sides of both legs. Don't forget to examine the genitalia and buttocks areas. Next sit on a stool or chair and examine both feet, toenails, soles and the areas between the toes

Tips & Warnings
  • Do a regular self-skin exam to check for signs of skin cancer.
  • Do the exam after a warm shower or bath in a room with good source of light.
  • Learn where your normal moles, birthmarks and skin tags are and to recognize any abnormal changes.
  • check skin on a regular basis at same time
  • Keep a diary or journal and record the dates of the skin exams and any changes noted
  • Compare previous photos to see if there are any changes
  • Follow up with your doctor if you are suspicious or find anything unusual during your skin exam.
