How to Do a Breast Self Exam

This Article will demonstrate step by step techniques in doing a self breast exam.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • full length mirror
  • bed
  • pillow
  1. Step 1

    After a warm shower find a well lit room and stand in front of the body. If both arms by the side of the body visually inspect the whole body and the breast for any signs of redness, swelling, lumps and irregular bumps.

  2. Step 2

    Next place both hands on the hips and look at both breasts again. Note if the breasts are aligned and positioned equally and that the appearance of the breast does not show any irregularities, like lumps or bumps.

  3. Step 3

    Raise both arms up into the air above the shoulders and note the breasts again at this position.

  4. Step 4

    Keep one arm straight up in the air and with the other hand reach over ti the opposite side breast and starting at the breast area closest to the armpit area start to make small circular motions all the way around the breast working your way in towards the centre of the e nipple area/

  5. Step 5

    When you are doing the palpating of the breast tissue please remember to use only the soft fleshy ends pads of the index, middle, and little fingers.

  6. Step 6

    Next, repeat the process on the opposite breast noting anything irregular or lumpy. Use only medium pressure when palpating the breast.

  7. Step 7

    Next, lye down on a comfortable bed and raise the arm closest to the bed and place it at right-angle under the head. At this position the tissue of the breast is relax.

  8. Step 8

    Use the opposite hand to examine the breast closest to the bed..

  9. Step 9

    Turn to lie on the other side of your body and then repeat the procedure on the other breast

  10. Step 10

    Keep a log or journal so you can have a source to reference back to at a later date.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are three different methods of palpating the breast tissue called Line, circular, and wedge method. Information on how to perform these methods are available on my site at Jewellproductions.tv and also in another article called BSE Methods.
  • Do the Breast Self Exam (BSE) at the same time each month and after the menstrual cycle.
  • Always consult the doctor if you notice anything new from your previous exams.
