This article will lead an aspiring writer to some of the different writers websites I have come across in my wanderings. I may not know much about art or how to write about it, but aren't we all writers of one degree or the other if we are writing how-tos?
I'd be prepared with a computer capable of managing digital materials, a small recorder, a decent digital camera, and, of course, internet service, digital photo software, printer and a word processor
Step1
The first step would be to get familiar with what the different website I show you have to offer and how to navigate, join, and utilize them to your benefit. And if you haven't already done so, learn how to use your digital equipment and software. The free photo programs are just fine for saving, sharing, editing, and previewing the photos you will upload to write about. CNET is the best place to find free software download, among everything else pc related.
Step2
Next I would learn all I could from other writers! Reading others is a good strategy for writers to have examples of both, what to do and what not to do. Then get started writing, submitting them for review by others in writing workshops/web sites.
Step3
Keep your recorder close, even by the bed for middle of the night thoughts. It's so much easier than trying to scrape pen and paper in the dark or on the move! Then, when writing about a particular piece, you will have a photo to refer to, and any thoughts or information handy!
Step4
Use a word processor to write with since you can format, delete, and change anything in a snap with it. I love my Works Word Processor. You can save, edit, spell/grammar check it, share, and design a template to re-use, too. You can then just send your finished product by e-mail or copy/paste it anywhere else for review or submission, along with a photo of the piece you are writing about!
Tips & Warnings
The sites I recommend are in order of importance. The first is Writing.com. It is full of knowledgeable people, information and forums for every genre, free to join, be reviewed, compile a portfolio, learn, and be published.
My next site would be Helium.com, where you have a more elevated class of reviewers and supporters. This is for the more advanced, but they publish and pay according to reviews and visits by peers.
Don't be discouraged! It takes time to find your own rhythm, comfort zone, and style, but with feedback from these very helpful people and writers you will have fun and learn to do what you want! And use these websites to find other venuues, publishers, and tools to write. There's a plethora of information and websites to learn from. And last, but not least, here's a site to check to keep from being scammed or victimized by fraudulent companies/websites called WinningWriters.com that is full of other useful information as well.
