They say that education begins at home. The basic things that a child needs to learn are taught in a home with the guidance of parents. From learning to speak, learning to walk, learning to sing and learning to respect others. One of the lessons that are first taught at home is about religion. In a Christian home, a child is taught about Christianity. New parents, however, may face some challenges when teaching Christianity to their child. If you are one of those Christian parents, this article will enumerate certain ways you can introduce your child to Christianity.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Bible
  • Christian books and videos
  • Christian shows
  • List of church activities

Step1
Pray together. Praying introduces the child to Christianity. When your child has started learning to speak and can understand or comprehend conversations, your child will easily learn how to pray. A child will surely be able to understand the value of prayers when you do this constantly with your child. Teaching your child to pray at an early age can teach your child to trust in the power of prayer and that this is a way to communicate with God.
Step2
Tell Biblical stories to your child. At bedtime, you can also read Biblical stories from the Bible to your child to help introduce Christianity at an early age.
Step3
Watch shows about Christianity. Depending on what church you belong to, you may have some television shows aired on weekends that your child can watch with you. There are also some videos that were created by your church organization that can be watched in your home. If so, encourage your child to watch them.
Step4
Take your child to church. The church is the real authority for teaching the words of God. There is no better place to teach Christianity in depth than in the church itself. Let your child learn more about Christianity by attending the Sunday school for children. As the child turns to pre-school age, he or she can attend the Sunday school regularly. There your child will be among other children learning Christianity. The format that it is taught in children’s worship services is different from the adult worship services for easier understanding.
Step5
Encourage your child to participate in church activities. Aside from the regular worship services, your child can participate in activities such as being part of the church children’s choir and being part of the children’s contests held in the church.
Step6
Daily or whenever you get the chance, teach your child Christianity and what it means to you. Help nourish your child with spiritual education by teaching your child good manners, compassion towards others and respect for other people. When you walk with your child and he or she asks who made all the beautiful living things around us, explain how it is stated in the Bible. Be your child’s role model by living in a way that good Christian parents should live. This way your child will learn and will grow up to be a good Christian just like you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Schedule a family prayer nightly to teach your child to be prayerful.
  • Avoid using self interpretation of the Bible. Make sure to refer your child to a church authority and tell your child to pay attention to worship services to help answer deeper questions.

on 12/22/2007 Amen to all of your feedback. If we give faith a normal, everyday place in our homes, prayer and spirituality will seem...normal and everyday.

One of my pet peeves is when parents say that they'll let their children decide for themselves when they are older. This is a terrible disservice to the children, who will have no idea where to begin. Instill knowledge about God and faith in them at home. Then when they begin to question their faith as teenagers, they at least have the basics as part of them.

The bottom line: A great and valuable article.

on 11/27/2007 I grew up in a christian family and have wanted to keep the reigion with my family, but because my children are small, I didn't want them to disrupt the sermon. But your article shows way to teach it at home and it's something I hadn't thought about.
